Textile Anti-Mold Agent Buying Guide: Cotton, Synthetic Fibers and Webbing

How to choose textile anti-mold agents? Cotton, synthetic fibers, webbing and finished garments need completely different treatments. The wrong choice means stiff hand feel and returns at best, or whole batches molding during sea freight at worst. This article provides a material-by-material selection guide with specific parameters.

1. First Identify Your Fabric Type

2. Why Cotton and Synthetics Need Different Treatment

Cotton fiber is rich in cellulose – mold nutrients – and highly absorbent (standard regain 8.5%). Above 12% moisture at 25-35°C, mold spots appear on cotton within 48 hours. Synthetics do not mold themselves, but starch-based size and softener residue feed mold. So: cotton needs deep fiber penetration; synthetics need surface treatment plus residue control.

3. Padding Process Parameters

  1. Liquor concentration: prepare at 2%-5% of fabric weight;
  2. Pick-up: control at 70%-80% – too low means poor penetration, too high burdens drying and affects hand feel;
  3. Drying temperature: 100-120°C, adjusted by line speed; reduce moisture below 5% before rolling;
  4. Verify: test per AATCC 30 or GB/T 24253 to confirm mold resistance grade.

4. Three Common Mistakes

  • Mistake 1: One agent for all fabrics. The same agent can attach 3x differently across fibers;
  • Mistake 2: Treating fabric only, ignoring packaging. During 30-60 days at sea, packaging humidity cannot escape and treated fabric re-molds;
  • Mistake 3: More is better. Above 5%, hand feel (stiffness) and color fastness suffer – follow recommended concentrations.
