Plastic products can grow mold and bacteria – and when a customer complains, the whole batch is usually rejected. Many plastics plant owners are puzzled: plastic is a “polymer”, how can it grow mold? In fact it is usually not the plastic itself that molds, but the plasticizers inside it, the moisture trapped in foam, and contamination on the surface. This guide is written for injection, blow, extrusion and foaming plants. It explains when you need anti-mold, when you need antibacterial, whether to use masterbatch, powder or spray, and how much to add for each material – all as executable parameters.
1. Plastic can grow mold and bacteria? First, understand that “anti-mold” and “antibacterial” are two different jobs
Two quick definitions for non-technical readers: anti-mold targets fungi (mold) – the typical symptom is black and green stains, most common in humid conditions. Antibacterial targets bacteria (E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and similar) – invisible to the eye, only detectable by testing, and most relevant for food-contact, medical and daily-use surfaces. The test standards and chemical systems are different, so decide first where the product is sold and what the customer requires, then choose which treatment to do. Mold and bacteria on plastic goods usually come from four sources:
- Plasticizer migration: plasticizers in soft PVC, synthetic leather and sealing strips slowly migrate to the surface and form a “food film” for mold;
- Moisture inside foam: sponge, EVA foam and PU foam contain countless open cells that absorb and hold water – once wet, they dry very slowly;
- Degradable fillers: products made with starch-based degradable material literally have “food” built into the plastic;
- Surface contamination and storage humidity: dust, hand sweat and a damp workshop let mold establish on the surface.
2. First choose the route: which scenario is your product in?

3. Four ways to add the agent: masterbatch, powder, liquid and surface coating
The same active ingredient can be delivered in different forms for different processes:
- Masterbatch (pellets): the active ingredient is pre-dispersed in a concentrated pellet; you simply mix it with virgin resin by weight before injection or extrusion. Typical addition 2%-4%, most even dispersion, best for automated production;
- Powder: suits PVC mixing and internal-mixer processes – add together with the powder feed;
- Liquid: suits spraying, dipping and liquid resin systems;
- Surface coating / spray: treats the finished surface without changing the base formulation – ideal for small batches and many product variations.
4. Choose the agent by material: addition rates for injection, blow and extrusion plants
4.1 General plastics (ABS, PP, PE, PS): food-grade antibacterial masterbatch 2%-4%
For food-contact products such as food containers, lunch boxes and straws, use iHeir-ECO food-grade plastic antimicrobial masterbatch at 2%-4%. It is an organic antimicrobial system with good compatibility with food-contact resins, and delivers over 99% reduction of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. After compounding, run the required tests to confirm compliance with your target market’s food-contact rules (such as GB 4806 in China or EU 10/2011).
4.2 Soft PVC: anti-mold powder at 1%-2% added with the powder feed
For shower curtains, table mats, synthetic leather and cable compounds, plasticizer migration is the main mold driver, so focus on anti-mold. Add iHeir-JS117 plastic anti-mildew powder during mixing at about 1%-2% of the total formulation. Because PVC processing temperatures are high, choose a heat-stable inhibitor so it does not decompose during processing.
4.3 Medical devices and long-contact parts: inorganic antibacterial masterbatch 3%-5%
For parts that touch people for long periods and need an antibacterial test report – infusion set parts, wheelchair armrests – prefer inorganic (silver or zinc ion) agents such as iHeir-IPL inorganic plastic antimicrobial agent at 3%-5%. Inorganic systems stand higher temperatures and last longer (slow silver-ion release); the trade-off is a higher addition rate that may affect transparency, so run a trial on transparent parts first.
4.4 Foamed products (sponge, EVA, PU foam): foam-specific antimicrobial agent

4.5 Silicone products: silicone antibacterial paste added before high-temperature curing
Silicone phone cases, teats and sealing rings need an antibacterial paste mixed into the raw silicone before curing; it survives curing temperatures above 200°C. Silicone mold treatment and selection are covered in Silicone Products Got Moldy?
Process details: adding masterbatch is not the end of the job
- Dispersion must be even: at 2%-4% addition the masterbatch must be fully mixed – dry-blend it with the resin for 5-8 minutes before processing so no area is left unprotected;
- Respect processing temperature: every agent has a temperature ceiling; exceeding it decomposes the active ingredient and cuts efficacy. Confirm the heat-stability data with your supplier before first use;
- Color and appearance: inorganic agents can make transparent parts hazy and light-colored parts shift tone – run a molded trial before bulk production;
- Do not use “one agent for everything”: food-contact, medical and outdoor requirements are completely different. Choose by working backwards from the test standard: antibacterial per ISO 22196 (Chinese equivalent GB/T 31402), mold per ASTM G21 or GB/T 24128.
5. Real case: a daily-use injection plant in East China
An injection plant in East China making bathroom storage items for Europe received complaints in Q4 2025: black mold spots appeared on clear storage boxes on retail shelves and unboxed cartons smelled musty; two containers were returned for rework. Investigation showed the products used ordinary PP, the workshop RH stayed above 75%, and finished goods were stacked directly in the workshop. The fix: add 3% iHeir-ECO food-grade antibacterial masterbatch to the PP formulation, install dehumidifiers to hold workshop RH below 60%, and store finished goods off the floor. After the change, an SGS report showed over 99% reduction of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus per ISO 22196, and the plant ran six months with zero complaints – the customer then named it a stable European supplier.
6. FAQ
6.1 Does my product need anti-mold or antibacterial?
Look at the use environment and the complaint direction: stains, odor or blackening point to mold; ISO 22196, FDA or food-contact certification points to antibacterial. Not sure? Send us product photos and the use scenario and we will help you decide.
6.2 Does a higher addition rate always work better?
No. Above the recommended range the effect plateaus while cost, mechanical properties and appearance suffer. Add within the recommended range and prove the effect with a test report.
6.3 Will the masterbatch weaken strength or transparency?
Inorganic agents at higher loadings have a small effect on transparency and toughness; organic systems affect less. For transparent or load-bearing parts, mold a trial and verify before bulk production.
6.4 With masterbatch, do we still need surface cleaning and warehouse humidity control?
