Huadu Shiling in Guangzhou is China’s leather goods capital — over 8000 leather goods and handbag factories, producing more than 600 million bags a year for export to Europe, America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Mold is among the top three claim causes for leather exports. One recent incident: a Shiling handbag maker shipped 15 000 handbags to Milan, Italy. After 26 days at sea, the consignee found 28% of the bags with white mildew spots on webbing and lining, and some real leather uppers covered in green mold spots. The Italian customer filed a full-batch return and RMB 560 000 claim. Another genuine leather handbag maker exporting 8000 pieces to the US saw the entire shipment moldy, RMB 380 000 in damages. Mold in bags typically appears at four ports: raw leather warehouse, production line glue and lasting, finished handbag packaging, and container sea-freight. This guide strings the five ports together into a directly deployable anti-mold plan for handbag makers, leather goods factories and foreign-trade companies.

1. Mold risk chain from Shiling bag cluster to container

The Shiling bag supply chain is even longer than footwear. Mold typically appears at four high-risk points:

1. Raw leather warehouse: Shiling leather material market (synthetic leather, genuine leather, PU, PVC, webbing, hardware) moves hundreds of tonnes of material daily. Without a mold inhibitor in the edge oiling liquid, mildew appears at the oiled edge within 5-7 days; water-based glue grows mold in the glue layer during humid conditions; semi-finished handbags dwell on the line 3-5 days, and during plum rains the workshop humidity often stays above the safe threshold.

3. Finished packaging: Shiling handbags typically use a four-layer pack: PE bag + tissue paper + color box + outer carton. Once the PE bag is sealed, the inner RH can reach 70%-85%. Color boxes and outer cartons use plain corrugated board without an anti-mold layer, so the leather absorbs moisture and the entire batch molds.

4. Container sea-freight: Mediterranean, trans-Pacific, US West Coast (18 days) and East Asia (5-7 days) routes all see container temperatures swing from 70°C sun to 25°C, with RH above 95%. The “container rain” condensation drips directly onto the color boxes, doubling the mold risk.

Mold prevention has to start at raw material moisture, leather surface treatment, semi-finished buffering, finished packaging protection, and container humidity — all five ports.

2. Shiling bag factory deployable SOP: five-port anti-mold plan

Below is a procedure directly insertable into the Shiling leather goods flow:

1. Material warehouse to factory: For genuine leather, PU leather, synthetic leather and webbing, spray iHeir-PF leather antimicrobial agent evenly on the surface (30-50 ml per square meter), air-dry 15-20 minutes before warehousing. 4. Finished handbag packing: Put each finished handbag into a PE bag with 1 Power Pak S tablet (small size fits a single handbag). Line the bottom of the color box with one sheet of iHeir anti-mold packaging paper (natural cotton paper base, biodegradable, 180+ day mold protection). Drop 1 Power Pak M tablet in each corner of the outer carton and stick one gas-phase anti-mold patch (iHeir-D 5 series) to the inside wall.

5. Finished warehouse and container sea-freight: Hold finished warehouse RH below 55%RH with industrial dehumidifiers, limit stacking to 3 layers. Hang 6-8 T-1000 container desiccant sticks per 20 ft container (350-400 g absorption each) and stick moisture-proof aluminum foil reflective film to the inner walls. Add 2-3 packs of CH-10 anti-mildew drying and deodorizing packs as backup (CH-10 contains activated carbon and silica gel, absorbing moisture while adsorbing the leather odor inside the box).

3. Real anonymized mold case at a Shiling handbag factory

A mid-size Shiling handbag factory (annual output 2.5 million pieces) shipped 15 000 handbags to Milan, Italy in June 2024 with FOB value RMB 1.8 million. After 26 days at sea, the consignee found 28% of the handbags with white mildew spots on the webbing, lining and inner pockets, and some real leather uppers covered in green mold spots. The Italian customer invoked contract annex 5 “on-arrival inspection” and filed a full-batch return and RMB 560 000 claim.

Root cause review: raw leather warehouse had no humidity control (humidity 82%RH during plum rains); semi-finished warehouse had no Power Pak tablets; finished handbags had no Power Pak tablets inside; outer cartons used plain corrugated board with no anti-mold paper; container had no T-1000 sticks and no moisture-proof aluminum foil.

Remediation: dehumidifier added to raw leather warehouse; iHeir-PF sprayed on genuine leather before storage; 0.3% iHeir-PF added to edge oiling liquid in production; 1 Power Pak S tablet in every finished handbag PE bag; iHeir anti-mold packaging paper lined in every color box; 1 Power Pak M tablet at each corner of the outer carton; 6 T-1000 sticks + 2 CH-10 packs per 20 ft container. 4. Anti-mold product selection guide for Shiling leather goods factories
